Out-of-province and salvage inspection information:

This guide will give you tons of information on out-of-province inspections, what a shop will look for, restrictions imposed by the province, etc.

Our policy will outline any shop-specific guidelines that Cycle Clinic follows, such as tire age.

Key points:

  • Before bringing your bike to the shop, you need to obtain a request for out-of-province inspection from any Alberta Registry.

  • If your bike fails and you remove it from the shop to get repairs done elsewhere, you have 10 days to return to get reinspected. If you do not return within 10 days, you need to get a new request.

  • Once your bike passes, you have 14 days to register your bike or the inspection certifications expire and the whole process needs to be done again.

  • Everything that was factory needs to be in place. For example, if your 1962 BSA didn’t come with signal lights from factory, you don’t need signal lights to pass an out-of-province inspection. However, if you peeled off those reflectors on your 2006 GSX-R, you’ll need to put them back on.

  • Anything illegal will fail - tucked license plates, ridiculously loud pipes, etc. Integrated signal lights will also fail, along with no license plate light.

  • Tires that are older than 5 years will fail. There is a DOT number on every tire, the first 2 numbers are the week, the second 2 numbers are the year. You can see an example here.

The same information is used to complete a salvage inspection, however you need to also bring pictures of the bike from every side pre-fix, a request for salvage inspection, along with a list of materials used to fix the bike (can be requested from Alberta registry).

Does Cycle Clinic provide estimates?

Cycle Clinic will not provide an estimate without first seeing the vehicle. This is frustrating to the customer, we recognize this, however each bike is different and each bike has a different mechanical history, and every repair is different.

You can read our policy here if you have more questions.

Can I bring in my own parts?

The short answer: no.

The long answer is that bringing in your own parts opens the door to all kinds of issues for our shop that we can easily avoid by Cycle Clinic providing the parts and being able to fall back on warranty and quality assurance.

You can read our policy here if you have more questions.

You’re cash only - are you a legit business?

We are! We have a business license, a CRA number, and we pay taxes.

Being cash only was a choice Chris made early on due to the fees of using cards and renting terminals. For a short time, we accepted e-transfers, but were running into issues of them getting stuck in the ether and having to track them down. In the end, we found that just sticking the cash was the easiest.
